I was only able to be there for part of the program, but the program plus
the exposure in the exhibits was really wonderful.

With my "metadata" hat on I attended a discussion of XML at a joint
MARBI/CCDA meeting on Monday afternoon. [note: MARBI - standards committee
for MARC formats; CCDA - cataloging standards committee.] There is much
interest in experimenting with XML as the next generation structure for
bibliographic data. I suggested to the group that a partnering with the
OSS4LIB group might get us optimum results because we'll need tools (read:
programs) to allow non-programmers to try out XML capabilities, and even
for those who program there should be much code that we can share.

I think that MARBI will be setting up a small group to take a first look at
XML in relation to MARC. We should look for synergy between these efforts.
